One of the first essential oil diffuser benefits you’ll notice is the unique and wonderful aroma they produce.

But they have much more to offer beyond their natural scents, thanks to the many nutrients and vitamins contained in each and every essential oil.

Depending on your needs, there is a long list of oil diffuser benefits you can enjoy, whether it’s helping you to get a better night’s sleep with lavender oil, easing your mind or improving the condition of your skin with tea tree oil. To give you an idea, we’ve put together 10 ways diffusing essential oils could improve your lifestyle.

What are essential oil diffuser benefits?

There are lots of diffuser benefits you can enjoy when burning your favourite essential oil, helping to create an all-around better sense of health and wellbeing.

1. A mood lifter

Whether you use aromatherapy to practise self care or prefer to use another method, it can make all the difference to your mood for the day. Essential oil diffusers are ideal because they gently release aromas that can offer a positive uplift for your emotional wellbeing. If you are feeling low or unsettled, diffusing an aroma like orange oil can go a long way to changing the way you feel for the day ahead or to help you get more out of your downtime in the evening.

2. Promotes a sense of calm

We all have to deal with stress and anxiety at various times, although there are moments when it can feel overwhelming. Burning essential oils in a diffuser offers a way to create a calm, soothing atmosphere that allows you to take a step back to centre yourself. Lavender oil can be especially helpful if your mind is racing and you need to find a way to ease thoughts that may be getting out of control.

3. Encourages relaxation

After a long day, it can sometimes be difficult to switch off away from your responsibilities. But diffusing oils can be the perfect aid to help you relax and unwind in the evening, with the calming scents and aromas creating a much-needed sense of calm. You can also couple it with other relaxation techniques, such as a long, hot bath or yoga practice, allowing your body and mind to unwind in unison.

4. Ease bodily aches and pains

Certain essential oils are great for lifting moods that have the knock-on effect of producing more feel-good chemicals in the body. Rosemary oil can also ease joint discomfort, altering how you psychologically perceive pain, which can reduce aches caused by joint difficulties. It may also be able to improve sleep patterns, and because your body recovers as you sleep this can also be helpful for your joints.

5. Opens airways for better breathing

Even in the comfort of your own home, there can be allergies, colds or coughs that can impact the quality of your breathing. Using a diffuser alongside eucalyptus oil benefits your body as it creates a sense of cleaner air to help you form a calmer breathing pattern. Some essential oils can help to detoxify the air, so you are breathing in purer, cleaner air throughout the day.

6. Can encourage a better night’s sleep

There can be lots of reasons why you may find it difficult to sleep at night, although often it is more mental than physical. Essential oil diffusers can play a big role in creating the right sort of relaxing atmosphere so you can relax and drift off a lot easier. Whether it’s in the bedroom or living room, burning lavender oil can relax the senses and calm overcrowded minds, so you only have to worry about drifting off to sleep.

7. Helps to promote healthier skin

Diffusing essential oils can be a great way to improve the condition of your skin and nails. Your skin may be a bit sensitive after a long day in the sun or you could be dealing with a mild rash, both of which could be eased by diffusing essential oils. Depending on the oil used and the vitamins and nutrients it contains, it can improve the elasticity of your skin, reduce fine lines and improve its overall appearance.

8. May improve eating habits

Some studies have found that the simple act of smelling oils can help to combat hunger cravings, although research is ongoing in this area. It is a method you could try at home by diffusing black pepper essential oil, which could give you more control in-between meals, so you reduce snacking and better manage your hunger cravings. So, whether you’re cutting back on sugar or trying to reduce your calorie intake, oil diffusion could prove to be a very helpful companion. However, it should never be used as a long-term food replacement plan or for missing main meals throughout the day.

9. Emotional stability before the menstrual cycle

If you experience difficult emotional challenges before your menstrual cycle or are dealing with other hormonal changes, diffusing clary sage oil could provide a solution. Moving between emotional highs and lows can be extremely draining, affecting your mood, mind state and producing unexpected physical responses. Burning oils can give you more balance during this period, so you feel more in control and like yourself more often than not.

10. Minimises the effects of seasonal conditions

Late autumn and winter can be challenging parts of the year for many people, with Seasonal Affective Disorder affecting energy levels, appetites and sleeping patterns. Diffusing essential oils around your house can provide some level of comfort, by improving your mood, helping you to sleep and generally creating a space that allows you to relax and unwind away from the colder weather and darker evenings outside.

Diffusing essential oils can go a long way to improving the way you feel mentally and physically. Not only will your home be filled with delightful aromas, but they can provide a better sense of wellbeing for you and your family. Please bear in mind that essential oils are not replacement treatments for serious mental or physical ailments, so it is also worthwhile speaking with your doctor if you require medication for more specific conditions.
