How to Make Hoover Discs with Fragrance Oils

Learn to create your own fragranced hoover discs to freshen your home while vacuuming with our easy DIY guide.

When it comes to refreshing your carpet and home, hoover discs are a great idea to try.

Whilst there are companies that sell them ready-made, you can save time and money by learning how to make hoover discs at home.

They instantly transform your vacuum cleaner into a portable diffuser, dispersing a welcoming aroma into every space you clean.

Here we explain what they are, how to make them and how to use them effectively.

What is a hoover disc?

Hoover discs are a relatively new invention that are used in vacuum cleaners to disperse a pleasant aroma into the air as you clean.

They offer a great way to freshen up your home, adding the scent of your favourite fragrance or essential oils to each room as you vacuum.

How do you use a hoover disc?

Before learning how to make hoover discs with fragrance oils, it’s helpful to know how they can be used.

Hoover discs are easy to make and even easier to use. Once you’ve made the disc, all you have to do is place one into your vacuum cleaner’s empty cylinder or a brand-new bag and clean as usual.

As you go around cleaning the floor, the scent will naturally disperse into the air, helping to lightly fragrance the floor and air.

What are the benefits of hoover discs?

So why use a hoover disc? The main benefits include:

  • Easy to make: Learning how to make hoover discs only requires you to use everyday ingredients that most people already have in their homes. All you need to do is mix a few things together and leave it to dry overnight and they’re ready to go.
  • Hassle-free application: Once the hoover disc is ready for use, simply insert it into the hoover filter and it does all the work for you. Odours are neutralised by the refreshing scent, and you only need to change the disc every once in a while.
  • Odour elimination: It could be an old or overused carpet, or the vacuum may have seen better days – either way, the odour release during hoovering isn’t always too pleasant. And because there is a huge range of fragrance oils to choose from, finding a scent that suits your home is never a hassle.

How to make hoover discs with fragrance oils

We’ve put together a list of step-by-step instructions on how to make scented hoover discs with a method that is quick and easy.

Before you get started, gather the following:

  • Glass mixing bowl
  • Silicone mini-muffin/cookie pan (that can hold at least 20 moulds)
  • 1 x cup baking soda
  • 1 x tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 4 x tablespoons distilled water
  • 25 x drops of your chosen fragrance oil (you can also use essential oils)

Instructions on how to make hoover discs with fragrance oils

  1. Mix all the ingredients inside the mixing bowl and blend.
  2. Carefully add the mixture to each mould in the muffin/cookie pan.
  3. Leave the mixture to dry overnight.
  4. When the mixture is completely dry, remove from the moulds and store in a dry place.

When you can no longer smell the aroma from the disc, it is time to replace it with a new one.

They can last for months at a time, although this depends on a few factors, such as how regularly you use the hoover.

What are the best fragrance oils to use with hoover discs?

This comes down to personal choice, as everyone has different tastes, but here are a few suggestions to give you some inspiration:

  • Refreshing: The scent of Ocean Breeze can add a new and refreshing fragrance layer to your home, whilst the smell of Baby Powder or Fresh Linen always brings a sense of comfort. Or you could try the aroma of Freshly Cut Grass to rejuvenate the senses.
  • Citrusy: Citrus smells light and joyous and can instantly change the ambience of any room. Savage blends mandarin, geranium and bergamot, whilst Crazy Chocolate & Orange is an enticing mix of zesty citrus fruits and smooth rich chocolate.
  • Spicy: If you love nothing more than the smell of freshly Baked Cinnamon Buns, then this could be the fragrance for your hoover disc. Pumpkin Spice is always a popular option during the colder months, and Cardamon & Cedar Blossom is beautifully exotic and floral.
  • Floral: Floral fragrances are always a popular choice for homes, with the likes of Jasmine adding a sweet, floral aroma and Rose allowing you to inhale the soft, delicate scents of a timeless flower.
