With winter now a distant memory and summer fast approaching, it’s a good time to start thinking about what you can do to give your skin more glow.

Making your own shimmer oil body lotion is fun and easy and it can add that amazing luminous shine you’ve always wanted.

Here we teach you how to make body oil that radiates on all skin types using only a small set of basic ingredients.

What is a shimmer body oil?

Shimmer body oil contains moisturising properties with natural shimmery pigments that can give your skin a healthy, vibrant glow.

They are easy to make at home as you only need a handful of accessible ingredients that take a matter of minutes to blend.

How to make a shimmer oil body lotion

To make a homemade body oil that shimmers on your skin, you’ll need the following:

Body shimmer oil recipe instructions

  1. Place a funnel into the top of the glass bottle.
  2. Add 3 teaspoons of mica powder, carefully shaking the funnel to ensure it passes through into the bottle.
  3. Melt 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in the microwave. When ready, add this to the bottle through the funnel.
  4. Pour 25 ml of jojoba oil through the funnel.
  5. Pour 50 ml of almond oil through the funnel.
  6. Add 10ml of your chosen essential oil to the mixture. Skin-loving oils like Tea Tree or Lavender are perfect.
  7. Shake the bottle to help the mixture blend together.

You can easily customise our body oil recipe by swapping the carrier oils or using a fragrance oil instead of an essential oil, just make sure to check the IFRA statements, as the dilution rate can change depending on the oil.

Be careful not to use a cold-pressed essential oil as they are phototoxic. Learn more about the safety of using phototoxic essential oils.

How to use body shimmer oil

Now that you’ve made your own DIY body oil, use the instructions below to apply it to your skin:

  1. Take a small amount of the oil into the palm of your hand.
  2. Apply to areas of your skin that you want to glow.
  3. Carefully rub the oil into your skin until it has been absorbed.
  4. This should leave behind a light shimmery coating.
  5. Alternatively, apply with a brush and leave it to absorb naturally for a more intense glow.

If you are using an essential oil for the first time, it is recommended that you complete a patch test to check for any irritation.

After 24 hours, if you do not experience any itching, redness, or inflammation, it should be fine to continue using the oil.

Final thoughts

If you’re new to shimmer body oil, our DIY body oil recipe shows you just how simple it is to make your own customised version at home.

Not only can it add a rich, natural luminosity to your skin, but using a combination of carrier oils and essential oils offers vital skin nourishing properties that can provide a host of wellness benefits.

Before applying the oil to large areas of skin, make sure to complete a patch test to reduce the risk of irritation.
